As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 49,958 people, 20,913 households, and 12,171 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,378.4/km (6,160.2/mi). There were 21,798 housing units at an average density of 1,037.8/km (2,687.9/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 52.50% White, 41.78% African American, 0.16% Native American, 2.56% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.58% of the population.

There were 20,913 households out of which 26.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 14.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
